Is there any reason for Miljevic to see the field again in a USMNT jersey? Martino seemed to think he fit in with the rest of the group but I just did not see it.

I disagreed with Martino's assessment. I thought Miljevic was better in this game than than last, but still pretty poor.

It's easy to see in retrospect why he was brought in--the rest of the midfield/wings in that Ven game were one or another degree of soft. Matko did a lot to push the issue that other guys wouldn't have, given Poch wasn't going to start Luna in both games (most likely due to the physical issues of getting in shape in JanCamp). You've got to bring in some grit if you're going to try to play Gutierrez and McGlynn at the same time.

The view of his play has been skewed by his 'rap sheet,' but was above JanCamp average (average includes the opponents). His assist will be chalked up to luck, which is obviously true, but it's a classic case of audentes fortuna iuvat.

Of course, a lot of guys who were above average in that context (White, Vassilev, Clark) probably aren't going anywhere. Matko probably won't either, but the one asterisk on that is he's headed to a better team, and some of what we saw might be some 'bad team habits' from Newell's that he might shake off.

Happy to see Luna get the start and create a goal that looked and felt like the kind of opportunity that would be created by a top flight Attacking CM. I couldn't watch the 2nd half, but I saw he came off at the start. That's a bummer. But I thought he showed his talents well today. He's nowhere near perfect, but at least he tries shit.

Showed talent, toughness, brains & commitment on both sides of the ball, both on and off the ball.

You can probably tell that performance from him sparked joy for me.

Call 'em 'skypes' and watch heads explode.

Really hope this performance gets Luna many more call-ups, he deserves it.

So am I correct in that your assessment is Berhalter essentially had the same tactics as a world class manager but needed to encourage them to be more daring?

Yes, and as I wrote last month, Berhalter was the perfect coach for the '22 cycle with such a young team. But it very clearly went stale in the second cycle – as things tend to with any type of manager, but especially strict, positional play managers.

Off topic but what does that mean for the Chicago Fire. Hope we have a young team he can mold or with more time day to day he can do more tactically to avoid the same issue?

I think Berhalter's system will work, and that he'll get the veterans to buy in.
