I owe a lot to Twitter. I don’t think I would have the job I have now, and the career I’ve had these past (almost) 15 years if not for that website. It’s been much more good than bad to me.
But 1) it’s been brutally bad for the world at large, and 2) it’s no longer as functional as it once was. I was already on my way out before the election six weeks ago; now I only show up there to drop links and find the occasional video to embed (Twitter is still good(ish) for that, at least).
In the meantime I have mostly migrated to BlueSky to meet my social media needs, and have mostly enjoyed it. The chat is good and the nuclear block function, in particular, is a life-saver. But it is not prime Twitter of the mid-2010s, nor will it ever be. Nor, frankly, should it strive to be.
What I’m saying is that I don’t know how long any of these social media platforms will last, nor how useful for reaching a new audience – or even making sure an old audience knows what’s up – they will be a year (a month? a week?) from now.
So I’m starting this newsletter for that reason. The format is simple: any time I write or podcast or am on video with something new, I will write a few paragraphs about it here, link it, and send it to y’all so you don’t miss it. This is all free of charge (hopefully forever). Think of it as bonus content1 for the true sickos.
That’s it. That’s the whole deal. Please do me a solid and share this around to folks who you think would be interested, and I’ll be forever in your debt.
There may also be the occasional free-standing USMNT column, since we don’t really do a lot of those on MLSsoccer.com anymore.
I should mention that I'll try to answer all comments on these posts. Interaction is good for the soul.
Really love this idea Matt, been reading your articles and analysis religiously for a decade since I started following the league. Can’t wait for more (and yes please more USMNT content as well!).
